Elon Musk Unveils XChat: A New Messaging Feature Aiming to Rival WhatsApp and Telegram

Elon Musk is taking another step toward transforming X (formerly Twitter) into a multi-functional platform by introducing XChat, a new messaging feature designed to compete with established services like WhatsApp, Messenger, and Telegram.

What is XChat?
XChat is a built-in messaging system within the X app that allows users to exchange direct messages, make audio and video calls, share media, and send temporary or disappearing messages. Available on mobile devices, the feature is accessible to both regular users and X Premium subscribers, though certain functions may require a subscription.

One of the key improvements with XChat is the introduction of an entirely new back-end system. According to Musk, this upgrade enables the platform to support stronger default encryption, better file sharing, and calls that don’t rely on phone numbers.

He also hinted that the platform is being developed using the Rust programming language, with a security model he describes as “Bitcoin-style encryption” — a claim that has generated mixed reactions, since Bitcoin transactions are transparent by nature.

A Bigger Vision: Messaging Meets Payments
More than just a messaging upgrade, XChat is believed to be a foundational component of a broader strategy. Musk has been vocal about his plans to launch X Payments — a feature that could allow users to send money, pay for services, and manage finances within the X app.

What sets XChat apart is its completely rebuilt back-end architecture, which Elon Musk claims enables end-to-end encryption and greater performance. According to Musk, XChat is:

Encrypted by default

Equipped with vanishing messages

Capable of sending large files

Designed for audio and video calling

This vision echoes platforms like WeChat in China, where messaging and payments are deeply integrated into everyday digital life. Musk is hoping to bring a similar experience to a Western audience, turning X into a central hub for communication, commerce, and content.

X says the system is built using Rust programming language with “Bitcoin-style” encryption — a comparison that’s raised eyebrows, as Bitcoin’s transparency (via public blockchain) is essentially the opposite of encryption. Still, X insists that the redesign offers stronger privacy and future flexibility.

Can It Succeed?
While the ambition is clear, the challenges are significant. Previous attempts by other tech companies to create super apps in Western markets have struggled to gain traction. Additionally, X is currently facing hurdles in user growth and platform engagement, which could impact adoption of its new tools.

Nonetheless, Musk’s background in fintech — particularly from his early involvement in PayPal — may give him a unique edge in merging communication and finance in a seamless user experience.

When Will XChat Be Available?
X has announced that XChat will begin rolling out to X Premium users this week. A full release is expected in phases, depending on performance and system load.

Whether this will mark the beginning of a major shift for the X platform or just another bold experiment remains to be seen.
